What You Need to Know
If you’re over 30, you probably remember a time when the traditional landline phone was a household staple. That landline, part of the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), has served us well for decades.
However, a significant change is on the horizon: the PSTN is being shut down by the end of 2027. Here’s what you need to know about this transition and how it will affect you.
As technology advances, maintaining the ageing infrastructure has become increasingly expensive and inefficient. To modernise the UK’s communication systems, the PSTN is being phased out in favour of Internet Protocol (IP) based networks, which use the internet to carry voice calls.
2023 Milestone
By the end of 2023, no new PSTN lines will be sold. If you set up a new phone service, it will be on an IP-based network.
Town by Town Transition
The migration to IP-based services will be gradual across the UK, giving everyone time to adjust.
THE BIG SWITCH OFF
The complete switch-off of the PSTN is scheduled for December 2027. This means that over the next few years, telephone services will be gradually migrated to digital networks.
How Will This Affect You?
The switch to IP-based services means that your telephone calls will go through your broadband internet connection rather than traditional copper phone lines.

Broadband CONNECTION
You’ll need a reliable broadband (SOGEA) connection for your connectivity service.
Compatible Devices
Check that your existing devices, like DECT phones, security systems and fax machines, are compatible with IP networks.
NEW EQUIPMENT
In some cases, you might need new equipment, such as a digital phone adapter or a VoIP phone.

So What are the benefits?
While change can be daunting, the move to digital networks comes with several benefits.
Efficiency
You’ll need a reliable broadband (SOGEA) connection for your connectivity service.
Better Call Quality
Check that your existing devices, like DECT phones, security systems and fax machines, are compatible with IP networks.
Futureproofing
IP-based services can easily integrate with other digital technologies, paving the way for innovative services and features.
